Why Talking & Sharing About Giving Matters
It's not about boasting - it's about inviting others in and sharing a mindset of generosity towards others and leading by example.Giving Tuesday is more than a global giving day. It is a reminder that generosity connects us all. For smaller charities like Mission Without Borders, this day has the power to transform lives, and it's a time when we can share a habit that's slowly getting quieter.
Small Actions, Big Impact
When supporters give, share, and spread the word, the impact of their influence multiplies. A simple act such as a $20 gift, a post on social media, and a conversation with a friend helps families across Eastern Europe break the cycle of poverty and find hope through faith and opportunity. It also amplifies our voice and message in channels that are becoming increasingly crowded and noisy as everyone is fighting for attention and click-bait fills your feeds.
The Heart Behind (and drawback) to Quiet Giving
In Canada, we often view giving as something private, a quiet act of compassion that we should keep to ourselves. Scripture supports that humility:
“But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.”- Matthew 6:3
This verse from Matthew reminds us that true generosity flows from love, not recognition. At Mission Without Borders, we deeply value that spirit: giving for the sake of others, not for applause.
But today’s world presents a new challenge. If generosity always stays hidden, how will others learn its value, benefits, and understand the discipline?
When Giving Stays Silent
Over the past twenty years, charitable giving in Canada has steadily declined. Fewer households are donating, and younger Canadians are giving less often.
The economy is a big factor when it comes to charitable giving. There is no arguing that younger Canadians are struggling with increasing expenses. However, one factor may hit closer to home: those that do give rarely talk about it. When parents give quietly without talking about it and explaining why, their children may never see generosity as something intentional or joyful. They may never learn that giving is an act of faith, a way of living out love for others, and something that can fit in any budget.
It creates a downward spiral where the act of charitable giving becomes quieter and quieter from generation to generation. It can become so quiet that the concept of giving becomes so muted it never becomes part of the equation when people consider how they can utilize their income.
Charitable Giving on the Decline
The number of Canadians claiming charitable tax credits has been declining year over year. For example, in 2010 about 23.4% of tax filers donated; by 2020 that had fallen to about 19.1%, and the downward trend is continuing. - The Fraser InstituteSharing is Also an Act of Generosity
On Giving Tuesday, sharing how and why you give is not boasting. It is inviting others in. When you post about supporting Mission Without Borders, you are not drawing attention to yourself. You are pointing toward the needs of others and the impact generosity has on the lives of those searching for hope.
Your voice can inspire someone else to give.
Your post can reach a heart that is waiting for a reason to help. It's not about posting about how much you give, it's about why you give.
Your story can show your children, friends, or church community what generosity looks like in action.
The Practical Side to Charitable Giving
Giving to registered charities in Canada opens up access to non-refundable federal and provincial tax credits - an important fact that sometimes isn't considered when teaching about financial literacy.
For most Canadians, donations to registered charities up to $200 get a 15% tax credit, and everything above that qualifies for 29% credit at the federal level.
Each province has its own Provincial Tax Credit as well, helping you decrease the amount of taxes you owe.
Get the credit you deserve
When you combine the federal and provincial credits, the total benefit usually ranges from about 20% to 50% of your donation, depending on where you live and how much you give throughout the year. This Giving Season: Give and Share Hope
