David’s First Backpack and a New Beginning
For children living in poverty, starting school can be overwhelming - especially without the basics. David, a seven-year-old from rural Moldova, received his first backpack through Mission Without Borders, a simple gift that became a symbol of hope and a fresh start.14th July 2025

Seven-year-old David sat on the edge of his narrow bed, his feet barely touching the cold floor.
His family’s small room, which also served as their kitchen, had peeling walls and a leaky roof. Life was hard, especially as colder months approached. But today, something felt different.
David lives in a remote village in northern Moldova with his older sister Denisa and their parents. His father works as a shepherd, and their meals are often just bread with homemade jam. Despite the challenges, there’s love and hope.
Denisa, age ten, loves pretending to be a teacher. She cheers David on as he practices his letters, sharing stories about school, friends, and playtime - things David had only dreamed about.
But this year, everything changed.
"Is This Really for Me?" David is about to start school for the very first time. On the day of his visit, Alexandru - a Mission Without Borders staff member - arrives with a surprise that will change David’s school journey forever.
Education Can Break the Cycle of Poverty
David is now ready to begin school, walking proudly with his big sister by his side. Their mother, Lilia, says:
“You should see them in the morning... so fast to wash, dress, and run out the door. I hope they’ll love school for years to come.”
Staff like Alexandru continue to visit David’s family, offering ongoing support, food parcels, warm encouragement, and practical help. He says:
“Their gratitude lifts my spirits. It’s a blessing to walk alongside families like theirs.”

Lilia watches with a hopeful smile. “In the mornings, they hurry to wash their faces, get dressed, and eat quickly, so eager to run out the door. I hope school will be a joy for them as they grow.”
Alexandru visits often, bringing encouragement, food, and supplies, walking alongside the family through difficult times.
“It’s a blessing for us at Mission Without Borders to be part of their journey,” he says. “Their gratitude reminds us why this work is so important, helping families like David’s step into a brighter future.”
Education is more than just learning, it’s a lifeline out of poverty, a key to unlocking dreams.
You can help a child like David start school with confidence. Give the gift of a backpack and supplies - and open the door to hope.
