I know that the same God who rescued me can rescue them too

Two Mission Without Borders coordinators, Sergiu and Roman, both love serving the Lord and sharing their faith, tell their stories.

Sergiu lives in Palanca, Moldova, where he serves as a coordinator for Mission Without Borders, working closely with children and families in need. His journey of faith began with curiosity and transformed into a life devoted to sharing God’s love.

“My first encounter with the Word of God came as a teenager,” Sergiu recalls. “Someone told me a story from Greek mythology about Samson and Heracles. It sparked my curiosity, and for the first time, I began thinking about spiritual things."

“Later, while working in a Christian collective, some colleagues tried to talk to me about God. I stubbornly resisted and was convinced I could prove them wrong. Yet somehow, I began to read the Bible on my own. When I reached the book of Revelation, the fear of divine judgment overwhelmed me. And I prayed my first prayer, quietly in my mind: ‘Lord, I am ashamed to repent in my home village. I want to repent among strangers.’”

He also faced another problem: his wife initially resisted the idea of faith. “She told me firmly she would never come to God. I prayed a second prayer: ‘Lord, I want to come to You along with my family.’ But life went on, and I attended church only a few times and then stopped altogether. Still, God’s timing was perfect.

My three prayers have been fulfilled: I came to God among strangers, together with my wife, on my birthday. Sergiu, MWB coordinator

“On the eve of my 30th birthday, a clear thought came to me: I prayed my third prayer, ‘Lord, I would like to repent on my birthday. ’That very day, a pastor unexpectedly came to our door and invited us to an evangelism event in a neighbouring town. My wife, who had resisted God for so long, was enthusiastic about going.

“The morning of my birthday, we walked into the church together. When the call came to follow Jesus, I knew God had answered my prayers. I looked for my wife, and from the balcony, she nodded, and we both stepped forward, surrendering our lives to the Lord together. At the end of the event, I excitedly shared: ‘My three prayers have been fulfilled: I came to God among strangers, together with my wife, on my birthday.’”

Sergiu’s faith grew stronger as he dedicated his life to serving others. “At the beginning, I felt too ashamed to talk about God with others,” he says. “But then one of the church members encouraged me, saying how I could offer even a warm handshake or a hug and share God’s love, even if I felt uncomfortable. I said to myself, ‘As a pastor, I must proclaim the Word of God even more eagerly.’ Since then, I’ve talked to everyone I meet about God. In our church, each week a member chooses someone from their circle of friends to sit and talk with me about faith. It is a joy to witness these conversations and see lives transformed.”

Sergiu is also deeply moved by the tangible impact of God’s love through the Mission.

Once, I was distributing food to families living in extreme poverty. I saw the joy in their eyes when they received help. It was clear they had run out of food, and God’s provision arrived just in time. Moments like that fill my heart with gratitude and remind me why we serve.

Today, Sergiu continues to carry the gospel forward, living as a testimony of God’s grace. Through his work with Mission Without Borders, he demonstrates that faith is not only a personal journey but a source of hope, healing, and transformation for entire communities.

Roman, 42, speaks about his faith with humility and with deep gratitude.

Today, he serves faithfully with Mission Without Borders in Drochia, Moldova, offering emotional and spiritual support to families in need. But his journey to this calling began in a very different place.

“I grew up in a respected family,” Roman says. “Religion was part of our tradition, something you participated in from time to time, but it never touched the heart.

Success, money, influence – those were the things that truly mattered. I believed that if I achieved enough, I would be satisfied. I didn’t feel I needed God.”

Then life began to unravel. “After several business failures, everything I had worked for collapsed,” he said. “I felt ashamed. I went abroad to try to rebuild my finances, thinking that if I could just recover materially, I would recover emotionally too.”

While abroad, Roman attended a few Christian camps organised by a local church. “I went for the atmosphere, for the music, for the people – not for God,” he said. “My heart was still closed.”

But God was not finished with him.

“In the summer of 2004, I was at the seaside with my family. I was pulled under and nearly drowned. I truly believed those were my last moments. In that moment of despair, I made a promise to God: if He would save me, I would serve him all my life.”

He knew when he survived, it wasn’t by chance. God had heard him, and that day, he gave his life to Christ.

At the time, there was no church building in his area. Youth meetings were held in his family home while his parents worked abroad in Russia and he lived under his grandmother’s care.

“I loved music, and the Christian songs touched something deep inside me. The friendships, the prayers, the sense of belonging meant that my heart began to heal. The emptiness I had tried to fill with success was replaced with peace.”

His transformation was visible. In 2007, he married a young Christian woman deeply devoted to serving the Lord.

“Through her faith and commitment, I felt God calling me further – not just to believe, but to serve.”

Today, Roman walks alongside vulnerable families through Mission Without Borders, sharing hope with those facing despair: people who, like him, have experienced failure, fear, and uncertainty.

When I sit with someone who feels hopeless, I remember the water closing over me. I remember that desperate prayer. And I know that the same God who rescued me can rescue them too.

“Working for the Mission is more than a job. It is the fulfilment of a promise I made in the darkest moment of my life. I once chased success and nearly lost everything. Now I have found something far greater – a life surrendered to God, and the privilege of helping others discover His love.”
