Living below the poverty line
Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the poorest countries in Europe. The impact of war, corruption and economic upheaval have led to entrenched hardship.
Almost 19% of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s citizens live below the national poverty line, and a further 50% are vulnerable to falling below the line.Mission Without Borders
The Kulas are a hard-working family who live in a village near Bugojno. Despite the fact that the father, Ahmet, has a job and does extra work at weekends, his low wages mean that it’s challenging for the family to afford even basic necessities.
Support to grow extra crops
Zinaida, the mother, said, “Most of our income goes on food. We had a very small garden where we grew some crops, but it was so small.”
When the family was enrolled on Mission Without Borders’s family sponsorship programme, their coordinator Nermin encouraged them to see if there was land nearby that they could use to grow extra crops.

Zinaida said, “He explained that the Mission could help us with seeds and tools. We also took part in an agricultural training workshop. And with God’s help we found a piece of land that we’re using for our crops.”
The happiness of a healthy diet
Now Zinaida and her children are happily growing lots of healthy vegetables and grains. The family are enjoying a healthier diet – and there’s less pressure on their budget.
She said, “Our whole family gets involved and my children help me a lot, from the youngest to the oldest. “It makes us really happy, especially when I make them lunch from something that they all watered and took care of.”
Low wages and in-work poverty affect many families in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Thanks to our sponsors, we can support families with new opportunities and ways of changing their lives for the better.
